Getting to Korcula
There are direct ferries from the following ports to Korcula: Dubrovnik, Hvar, Mljet, Rijeka, Split
Taking a bus to Korcula: Although there is not a bridge to Korcula, most Croatian cities along the coast offer busses to Korcula. The buses take the car ferry to the island.
Korcula Island
Located right off the Croatian coast in the Adriatic sea, Korcula island is truly a hidden gem. The island is only accessible by ferry, which takes you to the Korcula port located right outside of the historic old town. The over tourism and excessive crowds that much of the Croatian coast is experiencing has not yet reached this island paradise. I visited during peak tourism season at the end of the July, and the island was empty and quiet. This is the perfect destination if you are seeking a quiet oasis with plenty of outdoor activities. This article will cover everything you need to know Korcula beaches, and my future articles will discuss wine tastings, kayaks, and the Korcula Old Town.
Rent a Bike Korcula
If you are an active person, I highly recommend renting a bike in order to get the best of Korcula. There are a bunch of bike renting stands right outside of the Old Town walls, and you can usually rent a bike for the day for around 100 Kunas (13 euros). You can ride your bike across the island on the roads which aren’t too busy with cars.
Beaches near Korcula Town
There are a couple beaches located right next to the old town. Although these beaches are in a great location and offer a place to swim, they are very small and there is not a lot of space to spread out. The closes beaches to the Old Town are
Banje Beach Korcula
Banje Beach is a short 5-10 minute walk from the Old Town. Although the beach isn’t very big, it is a great swim spot with beautiful clear blue water.
Luka Korculanska Beach (Korcula Port Beach)
Although this area is very small, it is a sandy beach that offers a swim spot and a great view of the old town.
Sandy Beach Korcula:
Prizba Beach Korcula
Priza beach is my favorite sandy beach in Korcula. It is located about 30 killometers from the Old Town. If you are very active you can make the bike ride which takes about 2 hours each way. If you have a rental car it is about a 40 minute drive. The sea water is extremely clear and is great for swimming. The ground is a mix between small rocks and sand, and there is plenty of space to lay out and enjoy the sun.
Small Islands near Korcula
If you’ve already done some research on Korcula, you may know that there are many small islands that are a short ferry ride from Korcula. Near the old town there are a bunch of water taxis that offer you transport to the different islands for around 50 kunas (7 euros).
Badija Island and Badija Monastery
Badija was first settled in the 14th century by Franciscan Monks. The main attraction of the island is the Badija Monastery, which is located right next to the small port dock on the island. The Badija Monastery was completed in 1477, and served as a monastery for Bosnian Franciscan monks. The Monastery even served as a grammar school in the early 1900’s. Unfortunately, the communist authorities closed down the monastery in the 1950’s. Now, the island of Badija has a population of 0. There is a hike that circumnavigates the entire island. I travelled around this loop but was not impressed. Its mostly forested area and there are not many beaches or swim spots along the way. If you are looking for a beach, I recommend going to a different island or finding one on Korcula. Below are a couple more pictures from our trip to Badija Island.
