Things to do in Montauk Off Season

Located just north of the Hamptons, Montauk is a very popular tourist destination. I had had the pleasure of staying in Montauk this last April, and figured I’d share with you all of the best things to do in Montauk in the off season. Of course, these recommendations also work in the summer.

Things to do in Montauk off season

The best things to do in Montauk in the off season is to rent a bike, and to explore the restaurants and bars that are open year around.

Where to stay in Montauk in the off season

During the off season, I highly suggest that you check out booking.com. They have great discounted deals that you can’t find anywhere else. We were able to get a room in the Montauk Manor for one night for only $200. This is a total steal.

Below are some of my favorite pictures from the Montauk Manor.

Best place to rent a bike in Montauk

I found that the best place to rent a bike in Montauk is at Montauk Cycle Company. They rent bikes for $15 an hour. They have a wide selection of bikes depending on your height and experience level.

We rented the bikes for three hours, and were able to see just about all of the attractions Montauk has to offer. We stopped by all of the popular beaches, and took a stroll through the center of town. We’ve heard great things about the light house, but unfortunately the road to the lighthouse was under construction so we couldn’t make it there.

Best restaurants in Montauk off season

While Montauk has a lot of fabulous restaurants, most of them are closed during the off season. The best off season restaurant is Sel Rrose Montauk.

We had an incredible experience at Sel Rrose. We showed up without a reservation and they were able to seat us anyway. Their menu consists of mostly fresh sea food, which was perfect for us. We got the salmon and the catch of the day, which was a cod.

There is also a 7/11 conveniently located down the street, which we used to pick up a couple beets to pregame for the night.

Best sunset view in Montauk

Since the sun sets on the north shore, your sunset options are a bit limited in Montauk. If you want the best sunset view, I suggest you check out Puff & Putt mini golf. It is right on Fort Pond, and gives you a pretty decent view of the sunset.

Best bars in Montauk

I would say that the best bar in Montauk is Shagwong. It is open year around, and has a good presence of locals.

They have a lot of open space as wells as tables. They also have some pool tables which is fun if you’re trying to get active. We were there on a Saturday night when they had live music which was pretty sweet. The bar tenders were really nice, so I definitely suggest you check this spot out if you are in the area.

Best brunch in Montauk

The absolute best brunch spot in Montauk is Anthony’s pancake house. They have every breakfast food under the sun, and some of the best service you can image.

We decided to get their famous pancakes with sides of bacon and eggs. Despite being in Montauk, the pricing was very reasonable.

Best beaches in Montauk

While this might be controversial, the two best beaches in Montauk are Sunset Beach and Kirk Park beach.

Sunset beach is located on the north side of the town in a very quiet, residential area. There are very few people on this beach, as it is mostly the homeowners and renters. The water is very calm and there is a lot of beach area.

Kirk Park beach is a bit more crowded but also very nice. There is plenty of room to prop open your tent or beach towels, but you shouldn’t expect too much privacy.

Best way to get to Montauk from NYC

The two best ways to get to Montauk from New York City is with the LIRR or the Hampton Jitney. Both modes of transportation take around two and a half hours.

We took the LIRR train there, and the Hampton Jitney on the way back. If it fits your schedule, I suggest you take the train. However, the trains are pretty infrequent, especially in the off season. During the off season, there is usually only 2-3 trains a day. Luckily, there are usually 5-6 trips per day on the Hampton Jitney, so that might be the more convenient option, especially in the off season.
