Things to do in Hum: Croatia’s Smallest City!

Tucked away on a mountain in the middle of the forest, Hum is one of Croatia’s many hidden treasures. Despite being in the middle of nowhere in Istria, every year a couple hundred tourists make the trek up the mountain to visit the old town. Hum’s claim to fame is being the smallest town in the world. While this isn’t exactly true, the small city on the hill is certainly worth a visit. Despite it’s small size, there are a lot of fun things to do in Hum. Whether you are just visiting for the day or overnight, I am sure you will enjoy some of these recommendations of things to do in Hum.

Things to Do In Hum, Croatia

1) Walk through the City

While it sounds redundant, I definitely recommend taking a stroll through the city right when you arrive. There are only 2 main streets with a couple ally ways, all lined with beautiful plants and flowers hanging from the windows and shillings. Even if you walk slowly and take a lot of pictures, you can walk through the whole city of Hum in less than 30 minutes. As you might expect, there are a lot of photogenic spots in Hum.

2) The Best (and only) Restaurant in Hum: Humska Konoba

Humska Konoba best restaurant in Hum Croatia

Despite being the only restaurant in Hum, Humska Konoba serves up high quality dishes at a very reasonable price. All the meals are between 30-70 kunas (which is around 5-12 USD). The drinks are also very cheap, and you can get bear for only 2-3 USD. After eating at this place for lunch, we liked it so much that we decided to go back again for dinner. The waitress there was very hospitable, and you really can’t beat the beautiful view of the valley below. If you are making a stop in Hum, I strongly recommend eating at Humska Konoba!

Assumption of Mary Church: Hum

Church in hum croatia

Considering its large size and location in the middle of the city, the Assumption of Mary Church in Hum is pretty hard to miss. This Hum Church was built back in 1802, and is still used as the city’s main parish. The coolest part about the Church is the glagolitic writings located in the Church’s corridor. These writings date back to the 12th century, and are one of the few remaining artifacts displaying the old Croatian Glagolitic literature. It is free to view these writings and you are allowed to take pictures.

Raboš Wine Bar Hum

The region of Istria in Croatia is known for its good tasting wine, and the wine in Hum does not disappoint. If you are looking to test some of Istria’s best wine, I definitely recommend checking out Raboš wine bar. It is also located in the middle of the city, right next to the Assumption of Mary Church. The wine is actually much cheaper than you would expect. We got our glasses of wine for 10 kunas each (around 1.50 USD)

3) Enjoy the Hum sunset at the edge of town

At the far end of the town there is a great lookout point of the valley below. There is a bench where you can sit and enjoy the sunset. This is a great spot for pictures since you have the beautiful city walls in the background.

Hum Cemetery

If you still have time and are looking for stuff to do in Hum, you can always check out the town cemetery. It is located on a little hill next to the city walls, and has a great view of the mountains and hills nearby. You can tell by the last names that the town had a significant Italian diaspora in the early 1900’s.

How many people live in Hum, Croatia?

This was something I was very interested in once I started reading up more about Hum and it’s history. The waitress at the restaurant informed us that at the moment there are 29 people living in Hum.
